  CalWestern Teams of 1971-1972

THEN:

Ernie attend Cal Western/USIU and played football in 1971 & 72 prior to the move from the Pt. Loma campus. He then transferred to USD, where he led the nation in receiving and earned 1973 All-American honors with Coach Erik Widmark, and finished at Cal Poly (again going with Coach Widmark).

Wow all that seems so long ago. None-the-less I remember fondly my days at Cal Western. We had an incredible coaching staff during those days. Marv Braden, Lew Erber (late), Erik Widmark, Dante Scarnechia, Jimmie Skipper, Tom Hoffman, Bob Bass all of whom went on to coach at Div. I schools and in the NFL. Wow, what a staff at an NAIA school. I may have even forgotten other great ones. Played wide receiver.

NOW:

Following his college playing days, Ernie was signed with the Memphis Southmen of the World Football League in 1974 then after the league folded he had tryouts with the Colts (Baltimore) and Saints with no luck and finished his playing career with the Arkansas Champs of the American Football League as a player-coach in 1979.

He then went into education and taught/coached at the high school and college level for the next 20 years in California, Oklahoma, and Georgia. He worked as an advance scout for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Phoenix Cardinals, and New York Jets for 11 years.

From 2002 through the present Ernie worked as the Associate Director for the Georgia High School Association, the governing body of high school athletes in Georgia. He has been married to Cindy for the past 30 years and has two children, Shawn and Chelsy (no grandchildren). Ernie also operates the Georgia Academy of Softball and he is on the state board of the Georgia ASA (Amateur Softball Association). Ernie recently retired after a 30 year college basketball officiating career.
